According to the Global Hygiene Council, 59 percent of surfaces in the home can be contaminated with the flu virus which, surprisingly, can survive for up to 48 hours.
So how do you deal?
First off, wash your hands often and wash them properly, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It might sound simplistic, but hand washing is actually the most effective way to stay healthy, but only if done right. So use regular soap and water, scrub your hands front and back and in between and under the nails, for 20 seconds.
Also remind your kids to seeze and cough into the crux of their elbow and to keep their hands away from their eyes, nose, and mouth.
Disinfecting is also an important component in fighting the flu and staying healthy. Kids, after all, can touch and retouch more than 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes. (Scary, right?) So parents need to protect against the spread of germs by cleaning commonnly touch surfaces and objects with a disinfectant like Lysol Disenfectant Spray. And if you stay on top of cleaning and disenfecting, you stand a pretty good chance of killing any cold and flu bacteria before the germs have time to get you and your family sick.
Instead of waiting for the first sign of sniffles and body aches, make an appointment now to talk with your doctor to find out if you and your family members are good candidates for the flu vaccine (I get mine every year now that I have a daughter and young nephews!) and learn about over-the-counter medicines and (my fave) alternative remedies.
You also can stock up on items such as tissues, vitamin C, throat lozenges, hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray. Keep them in one handy place to make illness prevention even easier.
And, says Dr. Jim Sears, co-author of The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood, excercise, sufficient sleep, and good nutrition can go a log way in preventing the flu. A healthy diet packed with vitamins and nutrients and foods that boost the immune system like fish, citrus fruits and leafy veggies are highly recommended to stay healthy.
These are all great tips of course, but what busy mom doesn't need just a little bit of help? Would a designer diaper bag full of flu-fighting goodies be a welcome addition in your home? Yep, I figured as much.

To avoid getting the flu, wash your hands in hot soapy water multiple times a day. If you get the flu, help cook it out with chicken soup with plenty of garlic and a dash of cayenne pepper.

My favorite tip for fighting the flu and germs is washing hands. My kids wash before and after everything so we go through a lot of soap!! I have also taught all of my kids to sneeze into their elbow.

We wash our hands, but actually stay away from anti-bacterial stuff because some of the bacteria you pick up is good. We also eat healthy and are very active.

We also try to do a lot of hand washing to keep the flu away here. Plus, I had a friend long ago who swore by drinking lots of orange juice when he felt like he was getting sick, so now and again I pull that out too.

Thank you for having this! We try to stay healthy by taking our vitamins and getting lots of sleep and staying hydrated. Good home cooked meals help also. Thank you!

I've only actually had the flu once (not the sniffles that people claim to be the flu) and I'll tell you what? NOTHING HELPS! The muscles in my legs were in so much pain that i would be up all night whimpering. Yes, whimpering from the pain. I felt awful for about 1.5 weeks. Nyquil, pain relievers, nothing would help. So in my opinion, time is the only thing that heals the flu. I'm glad I only ever got it once. I don't wish the flu on anyone!
pposwaps(AT)gmail.com
We do everything from clorox wipes to lysol spray, but I think the best remedy is lots and lots of hand washing! We also sneeze or cough into our elbow or shoulder.
We use hand sanitizer to kill the nasty bugs. Recently we have been using CleanWell, which use thyme oil instead of alcohol. Thanks for the giveaway.

Hand sanitizer is a MUST around here! Especially when we are away from home!
We drink OJ every day in the fall and winter, and my grandmother makes giant vats of chicken soup that we freeze and keep handy when we need it. We also try to spend a little bit of time outside every day, no matter how cold it is, just to get some fresh air into our systems and into the house.

Food is defenitely one of the contrubuants to good health, there are many websites giving advice on healthy and affordable meals, after I married my adorable husband he lost 35 pounds because I do the cooking!
Washing hands is the best way to keep from spreading the flu
I tell my kids to keep their hands and mouths to themselves. That means no touching other kids' toys, germs are spread so easily that way. And definitely no sharing of drinks or food with other kids!
I had to have my tonsils out but I hardly ever get colds now.
We get plenty of rest, lots of tea and hot chocolate, and yummy stews and soups! We keep hand sanitizers in the car, the backpack, my purse, my husband's pocket, and our daughter's backpack whenever we go out. That way we always have it when we need it no matter where we are! Thanks!

We stay healthy by taking vitamins, and always washing our hands. We don't like to use the anitbacterial soap since it ends up huting you by not letting you naturally fight the bacteria and viruses. So it's just the regular (what everyone used to use) soap for us. Well, we do use the Germ-x out in public when there's nothing else, of course.
We fight the flu with lots of handwashing and vitamins.

I wish I had something unique and different but I always get a flu shot, wash my hands often and try to take it easy if I think I'm starting to get sick. I also carry hand sanitizer and wash my hands often. This giveaway is awesome and would be so perfect for my 2 and 8 month old sons. Thanks!!
We take Vitamin C, Flu Shots and try to stay active. Nothing new but it seems to work for us! Thanks a lot for such a great contest. Wish me luck. :)
Vitamins are great but getting antioxidants via vegetables is even better! Go dark leafy greens!
In my family prevention is the big thing. Keeping your hands clean and not touching your face is important, but also making sure that you are always drinking enough water, keeping well rested and yet exercising enough are our main defenses.

During cold and flu season I have the entire family (my 3 children, husband and I) drink 3 glasses of citrus flavored Airborne a day. Airborne is supposed to be used prior to taking airplane flights to help boost your immune system so you don’t catch colds, etc. while travelling on a plane. Well, I figured if it works for air travellers, then it must be just as effective on land! We have been practicing using Airborne for the past couple of years and that combined with constant hand washing and eating the right foods has kept this family cold and flu free!

Orange Juice and garlic.(Not together) When everyone starts getting sick I start taking both. If I get sick it's always to a lesser degree of everyone else.
We wash our hands a ton, drink lots of water and warm tea, and try our best not to share with others!
lots of orange juice
I employ a lot of the traditional methodologies I use to keep from getting ill (ironically I'm sick right now!), such as avoiding sick people whenever possible, and trying to keep my stress levels down. These are my biggest weaknesses- high stress coupled with sleep deprivation. Therefore, I try to take preventative measures -eating, sleeping and feeling well - and although I'm under the weather now, I very rarely succumb to everyone else's flu and cold germs.
We wash hands and I wipe down everything regularly with Clorox wipes!
Our families biggest flu fighting tip is hand sanitizer and kleenixes . ty 4 the entry
